Men's Health Awareness Month: Why It's Time to Stop Pushing Through Pain

June marks Men's Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the health challenges men face and encouraging positive action towards better physical and mental wellbeing.

For generations, many men have been taught to "get on with it", "man up", or simply push through discomfort. Whether it's a bad back, recurring headaches, fatigue, stress, or emotional struggles, the tendency to ignore symptoms and carry on can often delay recovery and lead to bigger problems down the line.

This Men's Health Awareness Month, let's challenge that mindset.

The Small Niggles Matter

Most serious health concerns don't appear overnight. They often start as small signs that something isn't quite right.

Perhaps it's:

  • A stiff neck that never fully settles

  • An aching shoulder that keeps returning

  • Lower back pain that's becoming more frequent

  • Persistent tiredness despite adequate sleep

  • Increased stress levels or difficulty switching off

  • Digestive issues, headaches, or unexplained tension

These "niggles" are often the body's way of asking for attention.

Ignoring them doesn't make them disappear. In many cases, the body compensates for dysfunction, meaning a small issue can gradually affect movement patterns, sleep quality, performance, mood, and overall health.

Addressing concerns early is often simpler, more effective, and less disruptive than waiting until symptoms become severe.

Pushing Through Pain Isn't a Badge of Honour

Many men take pride in being resilient. Resilience is valuable, but there's an important difference between resilience and neglect.

Pain is information. It's one of the body's most effective communication tools.

When we repeatedly push through pain, fatigue, or stress without addressing the underlying cause, we risk:

  • Prolonging recovery

  • Increasing injury risk

  • Reducing physical performance

  • Impacting mental wellbeing

  • Creating chronic patterns that become harder to resolve

Modern health care isn't about proving toughness by ignoring symptoms. It's about understanding your body, listening to its signals, and taking action when needed.

Seeking support is not a sign of weakness—it's a sign of self-awareness.

Men Need to Talk More About Their Health

Physical health and mental health are closely connected.

Many men will openly discuss football, work, family responsibilities, or hobbies, yet conversations about health often remain off-limits.

The reality is that many men experience similar challenges:

  • Stress and burnout

  • Anxiety

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Chronic pain

  • Low energy levels

  • Feelings of overwhelm

Talking about these experiences helps normalise them and reminds others that they're not alone.

A simple conversation with a friend, partner, family member, healthcare professional, or therapist can be the first step towards positive change.

Sometimes the most powerful question we can ask another man is:

"How are you really doing?"

And equally important is being willing to answer honestly when someone asks us the same question.

Early Support Leads to Better Outcomes

Whether you're experiencing physical discomfort, emotional stress, or simply feel that something isn't quite right, reaching out early can make a significant difference.

Health support isn't only for when things become unbearable.

Preventative care, lifestyle changes, movement, exercise, manual therapy, counselling, and regular health check-ups can all play a role in maintaining wellbeing and preventing small concerns from becoming larger issues.

Taking care of your health allows you to continue showing up for the people who depend on you—your partner, children, family, friends, colleagues, and most importantly, yourself.

A Different Definition of Strength

Perhaps it's time to redefine what strength looks like.

Strength isn't ignoring pain.

Strength isn't suffering in silence.

Strength isn't pretending everything is fine when it isn't.

Real strength is paying attention to your health, seeking support when you need it, and taking action before problems escalate.

This Men's Health Awareness Month, make a commitment to yourself:

  • Listen to your body.

  • Address the niggles.

  • Book the health check.

  • Start the conversation.

  • Reach out for support.

Because your health matters, and looking after yourself is one of the strongest decisions you can make.

Need Support?

If you've been living with recurring aches, pains, tension, fatigue, or stress-related symptoms, don't wait until they become a bigger problem. Early assessment and treatment can help identify underlying causes and support your body's ability to function at its best.

Your body has been talking to you all along. This month, take the time to listen.
